Jane Eyre-Renard is originally from Melbourne, Australia. Her wine story began in Melbourne when she was working as a hairdresser. A connection through a client took her to Burgundy which then led her to study winemaking and work at the Prince Wine store when she returned to Melbourne. After several vintages in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, she ended up in Burgundy full circle in 2004.
Her first vintage under her own label Jane Eyre was in 2011. At the time, she was working full time as a winemaker at Domaine Newman by day and making her own wines in a shared cellar in the evenings and weekends. Jane is a micro-négociant, an increasingly common entity in Burgundy as land is prohibitively expensive. She purchases grapes but grapes can be in short supply, depending on the vintage. Jane is a small producer making only 60 barrels in the 2018 vintage, up from 47 barrels in 2017. She has a light touch in the winery and only uses indigenous yeast for fermentation, adds sulphur only at bottling and doesn’t fine or filter.
